An Operating System is the software which interacts with the hardware of a computer system and functions as the intermediary between apps and the hardware, which includes peripherals such as a printer, a mouse or a keyboard. When you run an app, it sends requests to the OS through an API (Application Program Interface) and the interaction is done via a command line or a Graphical User Interface (GUI). Similar to a personal computer, web servers also use an Operating System that functions as a host for all the software installed on them, which includes script applications or server-side software such as a flash server, a VOIP server, etcetera. A virtual machine can be generated on a physical one, so it is possible to install a guest OS on it and have a different system environment in contrast to the physical server host Operating System.
Multiple OS in VPS
If you select one of our virtual private server plans, you will have as many as three different Operating Systems to select from - CentOS, Debian and Ubuntu. They are all Linux distributions and we offer them rather than offering just one OS, as the applications that you may want to run on the server may have specific requirements regarding the software environment. Each of these three has certain pros regarding the available plans that you may afterwards install, but what's common between them is that they are very stable and dependable and have large communities which support them. The hosting Control Panel options for the VPS accounts depend on your OS choice, so as to provide you with more flexibility. If you order the virtual server with one OS and you need a different one later, our technical support team can easily reinstall the VPS with the new one in a matter of minutes. We also offer the option to keep the Operating System on your server up-to-date on a weekly basis.
Multiple OS in Dedicated Hosting
We offer three Operating Systems with our dedicated server plans - CentOS, Ubuntu and Debian. They're all different Linux distributions and we offer them not only because they're absolutely free and they won't increase the cost of your new hosting server, but also because they are extremely stable and secure. Each of them is supported by a vast community of developers, so you'll be given the option to choose from a myriad of software packages that you may install on your server if the app that you intend to employ has specific requirements. The Operating System will also determine what hosting Control Panel you can use because the Control Panels that we offer run on specific OSs only and because we want to give you as much adaptability as possible, we offer a couple of OSs and multiple Control Panels. In case you choose a server with a given Operating System, we could change it upon request in the event that it turns out that you need a different one. We could also keep the OS updated on a weekly basis as part of our additional Managed Services upgrade.
